Repentance Follows a God sent Prophet

The Lord gave this message to Jonah son of Amittai: “Get up and go to the great city of Nineveh. Announce my judgment against it because I have seen how wicked its people are.” But Jonah got up and went in the opposite direction to get away from the Lord . He went down to the port of Joppa, where he found a ship leaving for Tarshish. He bought a ticket and went on board, hoping to escape from the Lord by sailing to Tarshish.-Jonah 1:1‭-‬3 NLT.

Disobedience and Correction

Jonah is an example of an unwilling prophet. His story shows us the classic example of God using someone who is initially unwilling, but is still used to fulfill God’s purpose.

After going through a storm, being thrown off of a ship and being swallowed by a whale Jonah then relented to God. Sometimes it takes great correction and trials from God, to bring us back on the path that we are meant to be on.

When I read the scriptures further, something stood out. The seamen were religious men. They might not have believed in Yahweh, but they believed that there was a God and turned their hearts and lives to Him when He demonstrated his power.

Revealing the Truth about Jonah 1 - 4

As for Jonah, I could see him sulking, as some of us often do when doing something is not for our benefit. I also could see him being thrown off the ship, sinking to the depths, gasping for breath and then being swallowed by what must have seemed to be a mountain. Only God could cause an animal that big, which likely did not eat flesh, to swallow a human being.

Imagine being in the esophagus and stomach of a living animal. Water would be everywhere. How then did Jonah survive?

With God’s help!

God would have altered the natural workings of the whale, to protect Jonah and keep him alive while he was in the whale’s stomach. That is how powerful our God is, because Jonah was not digested those three days.

After being spewed out on the beach, Jonah received his second chance and you can see that He didn’t hesitate. If it were me, I would be scared out of my mind.

Immediately, he proclaimed the Word of God.

Repentance

Jonah was a God sent prophet. Therefore, God not only made way for him, but the hearts of the people were open and ready to heed God’s warning.

The sailors were in the right placed at the right time, to be saved. Though they lost some cargo, they gained their soul. These were good men. Men who did not want to be guilty of murder when they threw Jonah overboard, so they did everything else first. That is why God allowed Jonah to divert, not only to correct him in such a way; but for God to be glorified and these men to also learn about and worship God.

In addition, a nation of 120,000 people were saved. When God sends you somewhere, it means that it is the ordained time and season for you to carry out that specific work. Any later and the people of Nineveh might have rejected the warning and God would have to destroy them.

Stubborn Anger

Anger is a rotten, poisonous root that will corrupt even the most saintly of men. The prophet was at risk of being corrupted and God had to use a plant and a worm to teach Jonah a lesson, again. A more subtle approach. For anger, on the flip side, can corrupt subtly; if one is unaware.

The book of Jonah, allows us to see a great demonstration of God’s power. It allows us to see that He is also a master strategist and will move heaven and earth, and everything in it to save his children.

Selah.

 The Poor oppressing the Poor

A poor person who oppresses the poor is like a pounding rain that destroys the crops.-Proverbs 28:3

How can you destroy your own, who are on your level?

How can you break the rung beneath to stop another man’s ascension?

If you fall, who will be below you to catch you?

It is dangerous to cleave to foolishness and not heed wisdom.

Think on these things : Embracing the Mess

Standard

“Where there are no oxen, the manger is empty, but from the strength of an ox comes an abundant harvest.” Proverbs 14:4

I used to walk through a new home subdivision. Often I would see the street filled with red clay from the land as bulldozers clear it to lay a foundation. The job site is littered with lumber, all sorts of trash from workers, and is generally a mess. The house looks ugly; it has all its insides exposed as it is being pieced together, yet this process is necessary to get to the finished product. When completed, the home is beautiful. The landscaping looks like it came out of a home-design magazine. Everything is clean and perfect in order for the new homeowner to move in.

Our walk with God is much the same process. Often we must go through a messy period of our lives in which all aspects of it are in disarray. It is in these times that God builds a new structure. He might remove some structural timbers in our lives and replace them with new ones. He might even add on another room. And unless this process takes place, we will never see the end product. The goal is more Christlikeness. In order to achieve this in us, He requires a period of removing all that is not of Him. It can be a painful process.

It would be impossible to keep oxen in a barn without having to clean up the mess from time to time. It just comes with the territory, but the result of the oxen is an abundant harvest. God may be allowing a mess in order to ensure a fruitful harvest in your life. Learn from Him so that you might experience the fulfillment of His purposes for you in these times.

Think on these things : Being a Vessel to Bless Others

Standard

“One man gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty. A generous man will prosper; he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed.” Proverbs 11:24-25

One of the reasons God entrusts money to us is to bless other Christians by meeting their needs. God uses the transfer of money within the Body of Christ to build unity among Christians. Sometimes we withhold money that God has designated for someone else. He wants to bless through us, but His will cannot be accomplished through us if we are disobedient.

This was the case for a business owner who tells of the time when God told him to forego a company bonus one year. God directed him to share his year-end bonus with an employee to show his appreciation for him. He wrestled with God for three full days before obeying the Lord on the matter. When he finally met with the employee to give him his check, the man said he had been praying about a financial need he had three days earlier. He had decided to borrow the money to meet his need. The amount of money he borrowed was the exact amount the business owner gave him.

God had already planned to provide for the employee through the business owner, but because he was hesitant, he almost missed the opportunity to be an instrument of God in this man’s life. Even so, he could have prevented the man from having to borrow money. It was an important lesson for the business owner.

How many people do we let down because we feel the “harvest” God provides is all ours? In America, the pressure is always on to move up the ladder of material accumulation. Jesus warned us about this. If our focus is on accumulation, we will not look for opportunities to be God’s vessels of financial blessing to others. Ask the Lord if you have an open hand when it comes to finances.
